金刚砂，SiC，学名碳化硅。碳化硅硬度仅次于金刚石、碳化硼和立方氮化硼，在无机材料中排行第四。目前已能通过热压烧结法制得高致密度的碳化硅。它具有很高的强度及良好的抗氧化性能，在高温下不变形，可作为高温燃气轮机上的涡轮叶片，也可作耐磨的密封材料，还可作火箭尾喷管的喷嘴及轻质的防弹用品等。晶胞为面心立方结构，每个晶胞含有4个C原子4个Si原子。与金刚石结构类似。纯的是无色晶体。密度3.06～3.20。硬度很大，大约是莫氏9度。一般的是无色粉状颗粒。磨碎以后，可以作研磨粉，可制擦光纸，又可制磨轮和砥石的摩擦表面。由砂和适量的碳放在电炉中加强热制得。

　　天然金刚砂又名石榴子石，系硅酸盐类矿物。经过水力分选，机械加工，筛选分级等方法制成的研磨材料。生产使用历史悠久，古代我国就有使用金刚砂研磨水晶玻璃，各种玉石的史例。十九世纪四十年代又远销东洋。分粗目，中目，细目三大类。其中粗目为黑红色，中目为淡红色，细目为红白色，各种目数粒度均匀，颗粒形状均一，成棱叫角晶体，有锋利的边缘，磨削力高。供石材类工业研磨大理石及其它软质材料。玻璃类工业研磨玻璃毛边，电视机显像管，光学器械，镜片，棱镜，钟表用玻璃等。金属类工业喷砂，除锈，研磨。印刷工业研磨胶版，以及轻工业加工塑样，皮革，砂纸等用途。

天然金刚砂的磨削力略低于电炉白刚玉，但其任性强，具有介壳状段口之特性，其优点是磨件的光洁度高，砂痕少而浅。磨面细而均匀，可提高产品质量，为本品的独特之处。天然金刚砂的研磨时间短，效益高，价格低廉，可弥补寿命短的不足

棕刚玉以优质铝矾土为原料，无烟煤，铁霄，通过采用在电弧冶炼。炉2200℃以上高温中提纯、除杂、结晶、分选、破碎、磁选、筛分等加工手段制成各种颗粒尺寸的产品。其质地致密、硬度高，粒形成球状，适用于制造陶 瓷、树脂高固结磨具以及研磨、抛光、喷砂、精密铸造等，还可用于制造高级耐火材料 。
